It never ceases to amaze me, how highly regarded historically the positions, skills, and knowledge of those producing cloth have been. In Italy in particular you can see where guilds of cloth makers and workers have erected satues and contributed to a broader community at large. Did you know the Medici family started as wool merchants specializing in the dirty task of washing or scouring and processing wool, before investing in banking, allowing them to rise from ordinary citizens to ruling Florence.
Slide 1: Orsanmichele, originally a grain mill, but with an Icon that was believed to perform miracles, became a church and was originally managed by the city’s trade guilds. Pictured here is the Tabernacle Arte dei Lana (Wool guild) and their patron St. Stephen. Other guilds to be found represented around this church are, Silk Weavers, Shoe Makers, Linen Drapers, Furriers, Finishers and Dyers, and Armourers. Philip always refers to Orsanmichele as “fashion church”
Slide 2: Is a stone relief of a sheep at Basilica Santa Maria Novella a symbol associated with the Medici family.
Slide 3: In Tremezzo, on Lake Como We came across St. Bartholomew’s Church, St. Bartholomew being a patron Saint of Tailors.
Slide 4: This alter and monument is of pure silver commissioned by the Arte di Calimal (the cloth merchants guild) started in 1367, to be housed in St. John, the Baptistry, the oldest monument in Florence believed to have originated as a Roman temple to Mars.

Something special is being made in the studio right now! Here’s a sneak peek at the inside of a morning coat. Morning coats or tails typically do not have outside pockets other than breast pocket, to achieve a smooth silhouette. Instead, they feature pockets inside the tails around hips!

At the recently restored #laspecola museum in #florence revisiting some of Philip’s masters thesis research. To be a good tailor you have to have a good understanding of #anatomy Trigger warning the last slide here is from our special tour of the anatomical waxes housed here. Have we also mentioned Philip’s love of flowers. The wax flower collection has a new home in the restored gallery as do the #Medici collection of minerals.

Before tape measures and rulers, cloth was sold by the “ell” or arms length. And because that differed between each person, a town or region had etched in a wall, near a market, town hall or duomo, what the legal length was in that municipality. This was used to resolve disputes, and differed between regions. Did you know the inch and yard that we use today wasn’t globally standardized until 1959? Here I am in Florence near the Palazzo Vecchio checking out what a Florentine ell was. As you can see there were several measures marked in the wall.

I forgot to add gardens to my last post on tailoring, art and textiles. In lake Como visiting silk mills, textile archives, patron saints of tailoring, and gardens. Philip does like to wear a flower on his lapel.

Trivia of the day: High end garments tend to have a smaller stitch length which means more stitches are applied per inch. Check your clothes to see if you catch any difference in stitch length!

We hosted a great group of high school students from Alpha II Alternative school last week. We spoke about how we work on the shop and what we do. We had a workshop for them focused on workwear that aligns with in class projects they are working on. We went over materials, details, demoed machines and even set up an indigo vat for experimentation. So great to see a new generation interested in and enthusiastic about sewing.

It would not be spring without a visit to @senecapoly King campus for our annual sheep shearing. Such a great interdisciplinary learning experience. This year we where able to get together Fashion Arts Students, Fashion Studies Students, Fashion Business Students, Veterinary Technician Students, Veterinary Assistant Students and Masters Students from TMU. Faculty from across these programs joined as did Seneca’s president David Agnew and the @campaignforwoolcanada. Nothing beats a visit with our flock and the horses next door.
Special thanks to Tara and Kate for hosting us and @senecafashion for supporting this.

@cbcnews was in the studio this week to ask us about making @hooraymae tuxedos for the Junos.
Thank you again @hooraymae for trusting us with this important assignment, @nadiapizzimenti for brining Mae to us and working with us on the looks, @amandajpel for arranging everything and @thejunoawards. So proud to have been a part of this celebration of Canadian talent.
In December, stylist @nadiapizzimenti reached out about creating a pair of looks for @hooraymae to wear while hosting the 2026 @thejunoawards. The goal was to create bespoke suits that were unexpected in colour and materials that would help Mae feel confident and comfortable on stage and on the red (or orange) carpet. For the first look, Nadia and Philip suggested a teal wool that was cut into a two button, peak lapel tuxedo with navy silk on the collar, pockets and buttons. For the on-stage suit, Mae decided on a brown, cropped, double-breasted jacket with a shawl collar in vintage silk worn with black, wide-legged trousers with inverted box pleats. With just two fittings - one virtual from L.A., and one final try-on backstage in Hamilton - Mae appeared on Sunday night looking the definition of dapper. Thank you to Mae, Nadia, Amanda and Sara for trusting our team, and, at the shop, Craig, Takuma, Tom and Sean, for your amazing work. First two photos by @tedbelton for @ellecanada.
We have more stories to tell and some of them are better suited (pun intended) to a format longer than a photo caption. We're going to keep things light, posting once a month, often to support a calendar of in-person talks the team will be planning to help you understand the world of bespoke better.
