A shop runs on well oiled machines. I find it a satisfying part of regular maintenance, adding a few drops of oil in critical places can make all the difference. Objects From the Studio: Today we have two antique big bolt shears, used for cutting heavy coatings. The first is 15”, made by J. Wiss & Sons in Newark. They are plainly well loved, as the blades have been sharpened so much that they are very narrow and no longer cut. The second is a mere 13”, made in Italy, but by a maker unknown to us. The maker mark appears as a letter R with a circle head, holding two swords crossed above. If you have any leads, please let us know! Big bolt shears are designed with a large thumb shelf and flat base to better transfer strength from the arm and body to the cutting edges, plus a wide, flat spine that can be struck with a mallet when even that is not enough! #torontobespoke #bigboltshears #tailorsshears #tailoringtools #customtailor
